Abstract. The paper considers environmental and land reclamation measures aimed at combating desertification and ecosystem degradation. Special attention is given to the activities of Soviet scientific institutions, such as the All-Russian Research Institute of Agroforestry Reclamation and the Institute of Deserts of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, which played a key role in developing and implementing measures for soil fertility restoration, protection of agricultural assets from sand encroachment, and improving the productivity of degraded lands. The paper provides a detailed account of the Soviet Un-ion's experience in developing environmental strategies, which were applied in international projects such as the UN Desertification Program in the Re-public of Mali. The main components of the pro-gram included afforestation and reclamation efforts, rational use of pastures, restoration of vegetation cover, establishment of wood plantations, and the implementation of activities aimed at raising environmental awareness among the local population. The desertification process in the Timbuktu region is analyzed as a consequence of climate change and unsustainable economic practices. The author pro-poses a comprehensive strategy for stabilizing eco-system degradation, based on preventive and active reclamation measures. The article also includes an assessment of the state of natural ecosystems and presents recommendations for the rational management of resources to ensure the sustainable socio-economic development of the region.
